what does it mean, 'being original'?

seems as if, with enough homework, you could track down the ancestry of just about any written word. it is one thing to be a compelling storyteller, but claiming to create a compelling story that shares not a bone with other stories in the world, this is unconvincing. one day, taking many beatings will peel mediocrity off my work, but i don't think i have an original bone in my body.

like goethe said about 'drawing from 3000 years' wouldnt the justifiably(?)perpetuated 'originality' meme demand be about building; developing a new argument UPON the old, intertexting, but never just repeating? its about creating new stories and new awarenesses. creating new. what do u think?
